This hope was in vain, as Sir Henry and Lucy also invited Doctor John Cristow and his wife, Gerda to the party.
John is Henrietta's lover and his presence prevents Lucy from realizing her dream; of Edward marrying Henrietta and providing Ainswick (Lucy's childhood home) with a mistress at last.

The catalyst to this dangerous mix of lovers and rivals appears in the person of Veronica Craye, a glamorous actress with a past connecting her to one of the houseguests.
